At-Need Guide
What to Expect: Working with Palos Verdes Funeral & Cremation Services
At Palos Verdes, we strive to make the arrangement process as clear and supportive as possible. From the initial moment of passing to the final placement of your loved one, here is what you can expect from our team.
Part 1: What to Do When a Death Occurs
When a death occurs, the first steps depend on the location and the circumstances. Here is a guide to the immediate requirements:
1. If the Death Occurs at a Hospital or Skilled Nursing Facility The medical staff will notify the next of kin and handle the legal pronouncement of death. Once you have been notified, you should call Palos Verdes Funeral & Cremation Services. The facility will typically require the name of the funeral home before they can release your loved one into our care.
2. If the Death Occurs Under Hospice Care (at Home or in a Facility) If your loved one is under the care of a hospice agency, your first call should be to the hospice nurse. The nurse will arrive to officially pronounce the death and will then instruct you to contact us. We will coordinate with the hospice staff to ensure a dignified transfer.
3. If the Death Occurs at Home (Unexpected or Not Under Hospice) If the death is unexpected or the person is not under hospice care, you must call 911 immediately. Law enforcement or emergency personnel will arrive to determine if a coroner’s investigation is required. Once the authorities have cleared the scene and provided a release, you may call us to begin the transfer process.
Part 2: The Arrangement and Care Process
1. Immediate Support and Transfer Our professional staff is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Upon your call, we coordinate the dignified transfer of your loved one from the place of death into our care. This transfer is handled by experienced personnel within our standard 30-mile service radius.
2. Choosing Your Arrangement Path We offer two distinct ways to finalize plans:
In-Person Consultation: Meet with a dedicated funeral arranger at our El Monte office to discuss options, view merchandise, and finalize all details in a supportive environment.
Web-Based Arrangements: For families choosing our digital-first packages, we provide secure links and all necessary information to complete the entire arrangement process online.
3. Documentation and Legal Compliance We provide comprehensive clerical assistance for all required legal paperwork. This includes:
Filing the Certificate of Death with the local registrar.
Securing the state-required Disposition Permit.
Ordering the certified copies of the death certificate you require for legal and financial matters.
4. Professional Care and Preparation Every decedent is treated with the highest level of respect. Depending on your chosen service, this stage includes:
Refrigeration: Climate-controlled care as required by California law for unembalmed remains.
Preparation: If a viewing or funeral is selected, our team performs professional embalming, dressing, cosmetology, and casketing.
5. The Service and Final Disposition We manage all logistics for the service you have selected:
Cremation: Handled individually and with dignity at our crematory.
Burial: Coordination of personnel and transportation (hearse or utility vehicle) to your chosen local cemetery.
Memorialization: Preparation of personalized items such as registry books, prayer cards, and digital tribute videos.
6. Completion and Finalization Once all services and legal requirements are fulfilled:
Pickup: We coordinate the pickup of the urn and certified death certificates from our office.
Delivery Options: For cremation packages, you may choose to have the urn delivered to you within our local service area.
Payment: Payment is due in full prior to services being rendered. We accept all major credit cards (subject to a 3% fee), certified checks, or direct bank deposits.
